What is ASD?
ASD is a disorder characterized by changes in neurodevelopmental functions, which can encompass qualitative and quantitative changes in communication, whether in verbal or non-verbal language, in social interaction and behavior, such as: repetitive actions, hyperfocus on specific objects and restriction of interests. Within the spectrum, degrees are identified that can be mild and with total independence, presenting slight adaptation difficulties, up to levels of total dependence for daily activities throughout life.
How is ASD diagnosed?
The initial suspicion of Autism Spectrum Disorder is usually made in childhood, involving a comprehensive assessment carried out by health professionals specialized in developmental disorders, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists or pediatricians. The diagnostic process usually involves several steps. As it is essentially clinical, the identification of autistic spectrum traits is carried out based on observations of the child, interviews with parents and the application of methods for monitoring child development during consultations to assess the child’s growth.
Anticipating suspected diagnosis and appropriate intervention can make a big difference in the lives of people with autism, promptly allowing early stimulation and referral to finalize the diagnosis in specialized care.
